Real Wedding – Sarah & David Holmes – 15th August 2024
Sarah & David truly made the byre their own back in August with all of their DIY touches including a New Zealand flag up next to our Scottish one! To hear a little bit about their day and some advice they give to couples planning their Kinkell Byre wedding, keep on reading…
Firstly a little bit about you..
How did you two meet?
We met on an online dating app
Where did you get engaged?
In the Whisky Rooms Restuarant in Edinburgh
Finding your venue and planning the wedding
What was it that first attracted you to Kinkell? Was there something that stood out when you knew it would be the perfect place for your special day?
We knew we wanted a laid back and casual wedding, rather than the big traditional wedding. We wanted to get married in Scotland and somewhere that wasn’t too far away from our friends and family in Edinburgh. David and his friends are really into golf, so we searched the St Andrews area and Kinkell Byre was the first venue we visited and we fell in love with it straight away. The venue was everything we wanted and we loved how you could make it your own.
Tell us a little bit about planning your wedding. Where did you start?
With living in England, we weren’t really sure where to start. After booking Kinkell Byre as our venue, we really just used their recommended suppliers.
We knew that they would all know the venue and would give us advice on how to make our day as special as it was.
How did you decide on a colour theme or style?
David and I really wanted to bring the Scottish and New Zealand theme into our day. We decided on having Thistle and Heather, along with some New Zealand Ferns in our Flowers, so decided to have our colour theme and style match our flowers.
Where did you find your suppliers?
On the Kinkell Website and through friend recommendations.
Is there anything you wish someone had told you about before about planning a barn wedding?
It feels overwhelming to begin with, but have faith in the suppliers and the team at Kinkell as they all know what they’re doing and your day will be perfect.
Was there anything that was really important to you both to have?
We said to each other that we would take 20 minutes out on the day and go and spend some time together, to take it all in, which we did.
The Big Day!
Tell us about your wedding day, what are your highlights and favourite memories?
The highlight of the day for us was the Ceremony. With Sarah being from New Zealand and a lot of our friends and family travelling from England, most of our guests had never been to a Scottish wedding before.
Everyone was laughing and commented on how our ceremony was the best they had ever been to. Having a humanist ceremony is personal to you and the tying of the knot and drinking from a quaich was very special.
Have you any advice for other couples that are planning their wedding?
Just take it all in and try not to stress too much, as everything will be perfect on the day. The team at Kinkell really help to make your day run smoothly.
How is married life treating you?
It’s not really any different, however we are enjoying calling each other ‘Husband and Wife’.
