It is always an absolute pleasure having Bespoke cater weddings at Kinkell Byre. Kelly and the team really do put the couples best interest at heart and will cater to any of your needs! Kelly has kindly answered a few questions about Bespoke and what inspires them to do what they do.
What is the story behind Bespoke Catering?
We are a small family run business that puts its clients at the heart of everything we do. We have two main parts to our business. The wedding side and the TV and film side where we have been fortunate enough to cater for some really amazing productions including, Outlander, Jurassic World, Outlaw King, and The grand Tour.
What services do you offer?
We offer a fully bespoke catering service designed around you. We also offer on the day event management, crockery and glassware hire and everything else that is needed to bring the day together.
What is your style?
We don’t have a set style and because we haven’t put ourselves in a certain catering category, this allows us so much creative freedom when it comes to designing our couples menus.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Our inspiration comes from our couples, we genuinely believe in getting to know our couples, and never know what we will be serving until we know who we will be serving. From individual dishes to entire events, every experience we create is truly unique, because each of our couples are unique
What would you say is your favourite dish?
I love tasting menus because there isn’t one single dish that is my favourite. Creating a journey and an experience through a tasting menu brings me so much happiness!

We have a fantastic choice of on-site locations for your unique ceremony. Inside and outside!
Here at Kinkell we have 3 indoor and 3 outdoor locations for your ceremony.
Indoor locations at Kinkell Byre:
Indoor Location 1. Our most popular Ceremony option is in the “Tattie Shed”. This shed that was added to the Byre in more recent years for storing potatoes in the winter. This is why this part of the building looks different to the rest of the Byre and has very little natural light. The Tattie shed is a large square room with red brick walls and a tin roof. However, it is also home to the custom-built starlight canopy, which Kinkell is well known for. This beautiful lighting canopy was built by Stephen Leslie of i-light to create a striking focal point in what originally was a very industrial looking shed.
The “Tattie Shed” can sit up to 200 guests comfortably for a ceremony and there are 3 different layouts in which you can choose from.
The most popular is the “horse shoe”. This is when the chairs are positioned in a semi-circle facing the red brick wall.
The second setup follows the flow of the canopy, sitting your guests in a full circle with the bride and groom saying their vows in the centre of the room. This is a very modern and unique setup for a wedding ceremony, which will leave your guests in awe and ensures that your wedding ceremony stands out from others.
The third and final setup in this room is a more traditional option with a long grand aisle for the bride to walk down with guests seated in rows at either side. At the bottom of the aisle the wall would typically be pipe and draped to create a beautiful white or coloured material backdrop adding a grand and luxurious look your wedding ceremony.
Indoor Location 2. The Entrance. This area, as you may have guessed is typically used as the entrance but it is the most charming room in the building. With lots of natural light flooding down the walls and its simple church-like shape, this is the most traditional looking ceremony location at Kinkell Byre. This area can sit 80 people in the lowers section and an addition 40 seated in the raised section.
Indoor Location 3. The glass door located in the bar area is our newest feature added to the Byre and has given the venue a slight modern twist framing our amazing sea views. This area is ideal for a small wedding under 100 guests and will allow you to say your vows in front of our spectacular sea views while fully protected from the Scottish weather.
Outdoor locations at Kinkell Byre:
Outdoor Location 1. The Country Garden with views of trees, a beautiful rustic field and an old 1800 water tower ruin forms a very pretty yet quirky setting for a ceremony. This lovely area is perfect for smaller, more intimate ceremonies.
Outdoor Location 2. There are two options outside the front of Kinkell Byre, which are the raised gravel area and the lower grass field. Both areas have breath-taking sea views. We are of course slightly biased, but I am sure many of you will agree that the view from outside Kinkell Byre is simply stunning and without a doubt one of the venue’s main features.
We have views right up the North East coast of Scotland, Carnoustie, Arbroath and Red Head and as far as Cruden Bay visible on a clear day. We are blessed with a unique micro-climate here on the east coast of Fife, granting us as many sunny days as the south of England, it’s surprising we do not see more ceremonies taking place outside!
Outdoor Location 3. Woodland Backdrop. This is an area that we have not yet had a ceremony but it would be STUNNING! For romantic boho wedding vibes we have the perfect wild flower garden which sits in front of the woodland area at Kinkell. This area would be simple yet beautiful and require very little or no decor. It is quite a small area meaning it would be best for ceremonies under 80 people.
We got together with an amazing florist who we see quite often here at Kinkell Byre, Blue Poppy Flowers. People regularly ask us about flowers and wedding floral arrangements, but it’s actually a subject we don’t actually know too much about! So with this in mind today’s blog has been put together to help us all out, with some amazing advice and information from a professional wedding flower specialist.
Question time with Cath, from Blue Poppy Florist:
What should a couple consider when searching for their perfect florists? (Are all florists the same?)
It’s important that you find the right florist for you. Each florist has their own style. You can get a good idea from looking at their website or social media. This way you can find someone who is on the same wavelength as you.
Our style is natural, leafy, colourful and garden-inspired. This style works perfectly with barn venues like Kinkell. We update our Instagram regularly (@bluepoppyflorist) For a lot of couples flowers are not something they know much about. How do you know what you want/can have?
It’s fine if you don’t know your flowers. We wouldn’t expect you to know everything- that’s our job. It’s more important that we get an idea of your style. Photos are really helpful as we can see immediately the look you want to achieve e.g festival, woodland, leafy or romantic and then we can guide you through the options and flower choices.
Does time of year of a couple’s wedding dictate what flowers they can have?
Yes, to an extent. You can get flowers out of season but they can be hugely pricey and can be of low quality. It is better to look at the seasonal varieties and colours available.
What is the cost of wedding flowers?
The total cost will include the following: flowers, VAT, sundries (e.g ribbons, foam, pins), packaging, containers, insurance, staff wages, vehicles, mileage. We tend to decorate larger wedding venues for which we can be arranging upwards of 1500 stems, so florist’s time is a big factor. Most weddings take our base team (of 4 people) a minimum of 90 hours in total. That’s a lot of flowering!
We create completely bespoke designs so there is no set price. We do have a minimum spend of £1200 to cover our costs. For a quote you can get in touch via the contact form on the website www.bluepoppyflorist.com.
How can a couple save money on their flowers or make their budget go further?
We always do an itemised quote for all arrangements on your wish-list initially. If that comes to over your budget we look at options. I would suggest going for a few key high impact arrangements over lots of little arrangements everywhere. Also reusing ceremony arrangements in the reception area is a good way to save money e.g aisle flowers and candles can be used to create a lovely top table display.
To save money you can DIY some things if you are confident and have plenty time. Sometimes couples will DIY little jars to dot around tables etc and we do the bouquets and bigger arrangements such as arches, ceremony arrangements.
What is the process after booking?
After booking us for your wedding flowers, we are on hand to answer any questions over email. Usually I would suggest a meeting at the venue at some point before your wedding where we can discuss arrangements. If you don’t live in the country, we arrange wedding flowers over email/phone.
Dates usually book up a year in advance so it’s likely you will see new ideas in the interim. It’s fine to a change a few arrangements along the way and we can re-quote for these. We ask for the final order to be confirmed 1 month before the wedding although understand you may need extra emergency buttonholes for a family member or friend you have forgotten about.
About Kinkell – What do you like about Kinkell, what works best and what are your favourite things to do at Kinkell?
Kinkell is a truly unique venue which is not comparable to any other. It’s amazing to see the space starting as a beautiful, blank canvas (with only Archie the highland coo as décor) transformed to a twinkly wonderland. Our favourite part of the set-up is seeing family and friends come into the venue and hearing the gasps and seeing the joyful reactions. There is no doubt Kinkell has the wow factor!
For us it is about enhancing the space, not hiding it. We love to dress the beautiful stone doorways with cascades of greenery and flowers. One of our favourite arrangements to create are hanging flowers. These look really magical in the ceremony area or above the top table. We love to use colour and feel it really brings the space to life. If colour isn’t your thing incorporate lots of greenery for impact.
We are lucky enough to be doing the flowers at Kinkell at least once a month so we know every nook and cranny- what works well and what makes impact. Flowers add life and warmth to the space and we always try to bring the feel of the garden indoors. The finishing touch is the lighting. The i-light team spend hours creating the perfect lighting which transforms the area into a fairy-tale venue.
What services do you offer?
We offer all flower arrangements ranging from wired hair flowers up to large scale installations and everything inbetween. We also hire props as part of our floral arrangements e.g milk churns, woodland props, rustic crates, vases, candles etc. Our delivery, set up and removal service is always included. That way you can relax and enjoy yourselves before and after the wedding.
What is Blue Poppy’s story?
We started selling garden flowers at farmers’ markets and Christmas stalls 6 years ago and steadily grew as a business over time. Although we started doing all florist work we now specialise in weddings due to demand. To date we have provided flowers for over 200 weddings.
We are a little different to the usual florist as we also have a family flower farming business. From April-October, we grow thousands of flowers in a 2 acre garden which are added to our arrangements.
We really do love our job. Meeting our couples, listening to their plans and bringing their ideas to life is an incredible honour. Every week we enter the workshop bursting with enthusiasm and ready to create something beautiful and unique.
And finally, Cath’s personal advice on what type of flowers to have at your wedding:
Go with the season and you will always have beautiful, timeless wedding flowers! In Spring, use delicate scented bulbs and blossom; in summer, wild flowers, roses and sweet peas; in autumn rich coloured dahlias and textures look amazing and in winter, the warm glow of candles amongst garlands and pinecones provide simple elegance.

We have a preferred bar supplier and here are the reasons why.
Our preferred bar supplier – Event Bars St Andrews
Here at Kinkell Byre we have decided to have a set bar supplier, Event Bars St Andrews. Event Bars is run by two gentlemen, Brian and Ross who we have come to know very well.
By having a set bar supplier, we feel this gives our clients a bar set up which appears to be a permanent feature and also provides a very high standard bar service without sacrificing the flexibility of the venue.
What do they offer that other mobile bar companies don’t?
Well… Event bars are based here at Kinkell Byre so this means that it works out cheaper for the client. They also have all their stock on site which allows them to stock more,
They have over 45 different gins in stock as well as 35 different malt whiskys!!
Stocking ‘Big Al’s Pale Ale’! Named after the 17yr old pet bullock at Kinkell Byre, hand reared since being orphaned at birth! Many thanks to St Andrews Brewing Co. for producing this stunning ale!
How it works
The way Event Bars work is pretty straightforward really. As long as you have more than 100 adult guests attending your wedding there is no charge for their services. If however you have less than 100 adults attending there is a small setup fee applied which is in place to ensure they cover all of their costs.
They will provide and install a fully equipped bar which includes draught Tennents, Guinness and, depending on guest numbers, a real ale from St Andrews Brewing Company. The extensive drinks list includes approximately 40 different gins, 30 malt whiskies as well as various vodkas, rums, bottled beers/ales, ciders etc.
Event Bars can also proudly boast to having their very own bottled ale, named ‘Big Al’s Pale Ale’ ,which is brewed in memory of the much loved pet bullock, here at Kinkell Byre.
As well as the bar provision, Event Bars also offer another great service which has proved to be extremely popular…
They can supply you with fantastic wines and fizz for the reception and breakfast at extremely affordable prices. They take care of the ordering, delivery and chilling of the wines so it is one less thing for you to think/worry about. Added to this, they will happily advise you on quantities required and can even offer you samples to try at your leisure!!
Their wine list is comprehensive to say the least and definitely worth considering!

Everything you need to know about wedding decor at Kinkell Byre
There is a lot of advice out there when it comes to wedding decor and a huge array of suppliers offering their services, to help make sure you get it right. However, when it comes to a barn wedding venue like Kinkell Byre, there really isn’t much information out there to help you. Our barn is a beautiful rustic old building, creating a perfect backdrop that allows each couple to design a wedding around their personal tastes. We understand it can be a little daunting knowing exactly how to achieve the look that you want and with this in mind we have asked the professionals (who have worked at Kinkell Byre) what their advice is, and what services that they can offer a couple getting married at Kinkell Byre.
Just Vintage Hire provides a prop hire and styling service. I would describe the style as alternative with a mixture of rustic, vintage, boho and industrial props. Couples can choose to just hire props by visiting the website or making an appointment to view at Just Vintage Hire HQ. Alternatively, I offer 2 styling packages to help couples bring their styling vision to life or just lend a helping hand and take some of their stress away.
I would really love a Kinkell Byre couple to hire my Peacock chairs to create a full on boho seating or chill out area. Used with rugs, tables, lanterns and floor cushions it would definitely make a real statement as well as being somewhere nice to relax. I love the Kinkell Byre tractor area, because well who doesn’t want a tractor at their wedding? It makes a great background for seating areas, photo stations and games zones.
My favourite source for wedding decor inspiration has to be Instagram, I follow some fantastic pages like @barnweddings, @junebugweddings and @greenweddingshoes. There is a constant stream of new ideas and lovely images to be inspired by.
My advice for Kinkell Byre couples is don’t be afraid to be different and if you think something is a great idea then just go for it. I am always up for helping couples create something special that is just them. Kinkell Byre is a gorgeous backdrop and blank space to let your imagination run wild!
At The Little White Cow we make DIY venues a little less naked and a little more you. We can take a space like Kinkell and make it yours with our props, finishing touching and styling skills. It’s not about traditions, trends or what others think – we’ll listen to you and help bring to life that little inkling, dreamy notion or vibe that you’ve been holding onto. It’s important and we get it.
Our large selection of chesterfield sofas look epic in the long room, turning the bar into a lounging space, and our selection of archways means that each ceremony can be completely different.
Our fave part of Kinkell Byre is personalising the entrance way so that your guests get a feel for the day, and your personalities, as soon as they enter!
Our favourite source for inspiration is your pinterest boards! We love to see what our couples are pinning, we are less trend led and more interested in what it is YOU like and makes sense for YOUR day.
Our advice to Kinkell byre couples is, take a deep breath. And call us.
Carnival Chaos are a leading event design and production company. What we have that we thing looks amazing at Kinkell Byre is a forest of trees specially grown for weddings and events. All the greenery we use is composted; we really make the world go round!
We love to dress everything at Kinkell Byre including all the nooks and crannies, both inside and out but sadly we can’t dress the sea! If we really have to choose it would be the main dining and dancing area, we like the scale of this space and the elevation leading the guests into it.
Where do we find inspiration? – An abundance of nature and a touch of bling – we love trees, trees, trees, flowers and plants mixed with a giant whirling mirror ball.
Our advice to Kinkell couples is every season is lovely so don’t necessarily be driven by a summer wedding – spring, autumn and winter are equally special with the added rustic cosiness of Kinkell Byre.

We hold a huge variety of styles to personalise your wedding day. Our cherry blossom trees are stunning in Kinkell and we can create any beautiful florals to suit your chosen wedding day, there are so many places for these to go.
What is your favourite part of Kinkell Byre to dress? – It all! We love creating an entrance to excite your guests as soon as they arrive. The ceremony room with all those fairy lights is just so romantic!
Our inspiration comes from our team, we have weekly brainstorming meetings and play days at our studio to find new creations and styles and we look ahead to new fashion trends for inspiration.
Our advice for is; as much as it’s not fun, creating a wedding budget is really important, it ensures you are matched with products and suppliers accordingly as they’ll work to get the most out of this for you once they know what this is. For your decor, flowers and styling decide on your must have items first then you can always add other items on but it’ll help you stay focus on what you both agree are important features and elements on your day.
Here at GO2 Event Hire we provide various items to enhance your chosen look or theme. You can choose from our I LOVE LETTERS 5ft Light Up Alphabet. We can also arrange to set up the display prior to your wedding. This allows you the chance to see your items in place before the big day!
We have a large stock of items that can help create Kinkell Byre into a wondrous venue. Our lighting ranges suit the rustic charm of the stonework walls and add that something personal to the already outstanding lighting features at Kinkell. The Dance floor is a great space to let your guests know what your day is all about! You can light it up with 5ft letters DANCE?, PARTY?, your INITIALS? or even your new SURNAME? ‘ St Andrews ‘ is also the home of golf! Why not entertain your guests with our mini-golf holes? These can be set up in the Bar area to enjoy through out the day!
It’s hard to choose a favourite part of Kinkell to dress, because its all great! The high ceilings and open space of the main area always create a warm feeling of ‘ wow, how amazing does this look! ‘ when its time for you guests to arrive. If pushed, we would say that having lighting set against the brickwork and barrels would be our favourite!
We always look at what inspires us to do what we do! Our workshop is always coming up with new ideas on what would look great & different! We strive to create items that compliment each other together or sit as a single piece that no-one else has seen before. Whether it be a fully restored 5ft Light up Star from a old fairground ride or a new hand made light box for your wedding schedule? We love looking around antique fairs, craft fairs, reclamation yards and sourcing items that we can give a second life to, especially if it involves a few days in the workshop!
Our advice – Enjoy the great space on offer! One of the charms of Kinkell Byre is that there are no set rules to go by! You can make the main entrance a wonder of light & foliage to welcome your guests or let the rustic walls & natural light do the talking! We would always recommend trying to create a story or theme and let your guests find out a little bit at a time.

Our straw bales are the ideal rustic seating option for Kinkell Byre. We can even make them into huge comfy sofas complete with cosy wool blankets and tweed cushions!
Our favourite space is the ceremony area at the back of the main barn, it has a very special feel. When the fairy lights are on and the alter space and aisle are dressed it becomes a really magical space. We love an organic foliage and flower backdrop! Saying that the “chill out” areas and bar areas are always great to dress as they are about comfort and lots of fun while of course looking good too!
Nature and the beautiful landscape of the East coast is definitely where we find inspiration. We are so lucky to live in such a special part of Scotland. We source as many of our materials locally as we can including our flowers which come from local growers, our wooden tree rounds cut from local estates and our straw bales from local farms.
Advice to couples, don’t underestimate the time it takes to dress a big barn venue like Kinkell Byre. If you opt to go for the DIY option and simply hire your decor then remember to book in lots of helpers and give yourself time. It’s totally achievable with a trusty team of hardworking friends and family and a useful option if your budget is tight. Alternatively take the pressure off and go for the styling and set up option with your prop hire supplier. You wont lose any control over the styling yet you will have time to enjoy the day before you wedding, catch up with family and pamper yourself before the big day!

Kinkell’s Advice
We have 15 years experience hosting events at Kinkell Byre and we have seen a lot and learned a lot in that time. Our advice is talk to us and discuss your plans with us so we can provide you with the best guidance possible without getting too involved.
A brief guide based on our experiences with caterers at our barn wedding venue
Choosing a caterer will be one of your most important tasks when organising a barn wedding.
A good caterer will work with you to create the perfect schedule for your wedding day and for the majority of the day, they will manage that schedule and make sure things go to plan.
So, what do you need to consider when choosing a caterer for your barn wedding?
Firstly, you need to think about what type of food you would like. There are so many options out there, so think long and hard, as a couple, about what type of food you and you’re guests would enjoy. If you are not sure, a good caterer will be able to advise based on your tastes.
Secondly, you need to have a rough idea of what your budget is (per head). Caterers, just like restaurants, can vary hugely in price.
Thirdly, a barn wedding is different to a standard hotel wedding. You need a caterer who understands this and can work just as well, if not better, within a barn setting.
What types of Caterers do we work with here at Kinkell Byre?
The All-in-One caterer – This is a very popular type of caterer and one that we see most often here at Kinkell. ‘All in one’ essentially means they take care of it all for you – they have their own cater hire, décor, staff, and front of house coordinator. They also set up everything for you, take care of all the catering during your day and stay until the end to clear up. This option is a low hassle option for couples, especially if you are planning your wedding at a distance from the venue. They also often work out to be the cheaper option as they sometimes offer reduced rates on cater hire.
Catering & Service – This type of caterer will work closely with you to choose the perfect menu and timings for your wedding. They will arrive on the day of the wedding with staff and deal with all the catering side of your event. The responsibility to organise cater hire and set up tables tends to be left with you but most Catering & Service caterers will help you with this. You may need to organise suppliers to break down the furniture and contribute towards clearing up the venue at the end of your wedding.
Street Food – Food vans or stalls can be located on-site and serve up their speciality food to you and your guests. This is a lovely, fun and relaxed option but street food caterers can vary a lot in terms of what’s included so make sure you understand the package on offer.
All options are fantastic in their own right and they allow you to choose exactly what you want for your wedding day.
I have asked all of our recommended caterers “What does your company offer a Kinkell Byre couple?” and you can read through their replies below.

STREET FOOD
Street Food is a big trend at the moment so we have put together a list of some great street food suppliers and some info on how to make street food work for your event.
A lot of street food providers do not necessarily provide staff and therefore it is important to ensure the smooth running of your event that there will be sufficient staff available to take care of serving and clearing of food, wine & water. This may also need to include setting tables and clearing at the end of the night.

Highland Spit Roasts Highland Spit Roasts has been providing FABULOUS spit roasts since 1989. We specialise in producing crispy golden crackling and moist tender meat from locally bred pigs. We are famous for our crackling and were chosen to provide the roast for Prince William and Kate on their recent visit to Strathearn – the crackling definitely met with royal approval! Our roasts are cooked on a spit which turns, letting the juices run through the meat and keeping it tender and moist – ( the knights of old knew a thing or two about roasting meat!). We can carve either straight off the roast or onto platters for table service. The roaster is designed to work indoors so guests can admire the roast turning and then – see it lifted up above the roaster, sizzling and delicious, ready for carving – Great theatre!

An introduction to removing the stress from planning your barn wedding
Planning a wedding can be a very daunting task, especially when you want a unique wedding venue such as a barn.
We are always more than happy to offer our couples guidance and support when they ask for it but couples are not always sure what kind of questions to ask.
So… we thought it might be helpful to pull together lots of wedding advice and information and do a series of blogs about how to plan a barn wedding.
Kinkell Byre has been a venue since 2004 and we now have 14 years of experience in hosting barn weddings. We have held hundreds of weddings in that time and probably witnessed hundreds of varying themes and styles. I think it’s safe to say, we know what works.
The most magical thing about a blank canvas wedding venue is that no two weddings look the same and it provides the foundation for endless possibilities for different themes and styles. It allows you to create YOUR dream wedding.
BUT
Where do you start?
There are so many options!
What works?
Is it worth the money?
Do we really need it?
It can be pretty scary for some people when they realise how many different options are available and also how fast suppliers book up.
To help you plan a stress free wedding, over the next few months, we will use our experience and gather all the information we think you need to know and create a series of easy to understand blog articles offering all the advice and tips that will make your planning as stress free as is possible..
