Real Wedding – Caitlin & Erik Wishart – 13th April 2023
These two fleetwood mac lovers got married at Kinkell back in April and wow what a day it was!! The byre was beautifully decorated in rustic warm tones and had so much hints of their personality throughout! They met on a blind date set up from friends and the rest was history…. take a little read below to hear about their big day and some do’s and donts!
Firstly a little bit about you..
How did you two meet?
Eric and I met after being set up on a blind date during lockdown!
Where did you get engaged?
We got engaged local to our house overlooking the golf course. Eric knew I didn’t want anything public so this was perfect for us both.
Finding your venue and planning the wedding
What was it that first attracted you to Kinkell? Was there something that stood out when you knew it would be the perfect place for your special day?
I have always loved the look of Kinkell and never thought it would ever actually end up to be my wedding venue. The flexibility it gives you to do exactly what you want is amazing. It was also very handy as it is local and close to home.
Tell us a little bit about planning your wedding. Where did you start?
With lockdown weddings still trying to catch up, we found that we really had to move quickly if we wanted our desired suppliers. Everyone was so busy! We only looked around Kinkell and one other venue but as soon as we stepped in to Kinkell, we just knew.
How did you decide on a colour theme or style?
I really wanted to try and go for something a little different.
When we met, we both had a mutual love for Fleetwood Mac. My dress was also giving Stevie Nicks vibes. We decided to run with it down to our table names all being names of songs and lyric banners.
I knew I wanted all of my bridesmaids to be in different styles, tones and pattern but all sticking to the same colour palette. We wanted to go with the rustic theme the barn already had to offer and chose to go with rust orange tones with lots of dried flowers. I think this really looks great and suits Kinkell so well.
Where did you find your suppliers?
Mostly Instagram! You do begin to get overwhelmed by emailing lots of different suppliers. The list of recommendations from Kinkell is most helpful.
Is there anything you wish someone had told you about before about planning a barn wedding?
Find the balance of DIY! I was loving all the TikTok videos of brides with great ideas trying to save some pennies by making things yourself. I decided to do the napkin hack. IKEA curtains, dye them to your colour theme, then cut and fray the edges into napkins. Unless you want to lose your sanity – DON’T DO IT. By the 120th napkin, there were tears.
Lots of DIY did go well but chose your battles!
Was there anything that was really important to you both to have?
We both have the same opinion that a good band at a wedding makes the day. We are really into our music and it was so important we had a fantastic band. We weren’t let down one bit by ERNEST. May be biased here but they are the best wedding band I have ever heard, and we are so so thankful they were a part of our day. We actually booked Kinkell around the band just we could have them!
The Big Day!
Tell us about your wedding day, what are your highlights and favourite memories?
Having all of our friends and family all together was really amazing. Everyone has been talking about the day ever since!
Everything ran so smoothly. Special thank you to Sophie and to Steve on lights. You really made everything amazing for us.
Have you any advice for other couples that are planning their wedding?
There is no such thing as booking too early.
Don’t let others determine what you plan for your day.
Book the cabins, it’s so much fun!
Book a videographer. After everything is over and you are back from your honeymoon you can feel a little deflated… until the video is sent over and you get to relive it all again! There is so much as the bride & groom that you don’t get to see, and this captures it all.
How is married life treating you?
Amazing!! After our wedding day we had our honeymoon to Hawaii then on to Vancouver which was surreal. We are both very grateful.
