Real Wedding – Sarah & Craig Wemyss – 7th April 2022
Sarah and Craig finally had the day they deserved after waiting almost 4 years because of covid! They decorated the byre beautifully with little pops of lilac to really brighten each room! They have told us a little bit about their day and their suppliers below
How did you guys meet?
We met at one of my best friends (she done a reading at our wedding) birthday ‘nights out’ in Lulu in Edinburgh.
What first attracted you to Kinkell Byre? And what made you decide that it would be perfect for your special day?
We always knew we wanted a barn wedding when we had attended one a few years ago. After looking at a few barn venues closer to home we decided to take a trip to St Andrew’s to visit Kinkell as the pictures online looked amazing.
As soon as we walked in we knew that Kinkell was the one. We loved how big it was which meant things didn’t need to be set up and taken down to allow different parts of the day to happen (we seen a lot of this when looking at venues). We also loved the lights, particularly the canopy set up in the ceremony room- it was so pretty. The location is also incredible, right on the beach, what more could you want? It is also so quiet and peaceful, you feel like there is nothing else around which Is a lovey feeling.
Tell us a little bit about planning your wedding? What inspired you to pick all the things that you did and what was most important to you both?
We really liked that Kinkell had a recommended suppliers list. It can be really overwhelming when you start to think of all the different things you require for your wedding to happen/ look the way you want it to. We also liked that Kinkell document each wedding on their Instagram page as you can look through each wedding and get ideas for décor etc which was really helpful. It was important to us that our wedding represented us, so being able to create our own look from scratch was ideal.
What did you both enjoy planning?
The cake was fun as we got to taste lots of different flavours. Our cake was by Liggy’s cakes. Creating our first dance was also fun!
Tell us about your day?
Our day was incredible from start to finish. We both had the best day and couldn’t have asked for anything better. We got so many compliments from our guests, particularly how beautiful the venue was and how good the band were.
Craig arrived early for the Grooms reception, which he really enjoyed as It allowed him time to greet our guests and for everyone to have a wee drink before the ceremony. I arrived early which allowed the bridal party to get some really nice photo’s at the entrance and it gave me a minute to gather my thoughts. I was excited to see everyone, walk down the aisle with my Dad and finally marry Craig (this was our third date due to Covid).
The ceremony was really special and felt really intimate. It was so nice to stand up in front of all of our family and friends and tie the knot. Beverley, our humanist, was great! After we got married we spoke briefly with all of our guests which was really nice, we hadn’t planned this, it just happened naturally but we are glad we did it.
We then had a drink with everyone and went off to get some pictures. Our pictures are incredible, Iain done a fantastic job. It was particularly cold and windy that day but we managed to ignore the cold (probably the adrenaline) and the wind meant we got some great photo’s with my veil floating in the wind.
We then sat down to our meal. The speeches were all great! I even did a speech and it was probably one of my highlights of the day. I would encourage all future brides to say a few words, it your day after all! The meal ran smoothly, we cut the cake and then it was time for our first dance. We choreographed and performed our own routine and It was so much fun! We wanted to mix it up and since I teach dance and Craig has natural rhythm, It seemed only right to put on a performance. Our guests loved It and so did we. After that it was time to get drunk. We played our own music after the band finished at 12am and finished with ‘Caledonia’, It was the perfect end of our perfect day. We partied all night, leaving the venue just before 2am!
What made it so special?
Every part of our day represented us.
What was your favourite part of the day?
- Walking down the aisle with my Dad
- The reading by one of my best friends (she wrote It herself)
- Our first dance
- All of the speeches
What advice do you have for other couples planning their wedding?
Create a list of things you need (we used a spreadsheet) and take it one thing at a time (It feels like there is so much to do so this is a good way to not get yourself stressed out). Start with the most important things; the venue, the Humanist, the photographer, the videographer and the band and go from there.
Enjoy every part of it and make sure that on the day you take It all in. Take a minute just the two of you and look at all of your guests. They are all there for you and it is such a nice feeling.
Definitely get a videographer, we can’t wait to re-live our day over and over again.
As I said earlier, Brides, say a few words if you can, I loved It!
How is married life treating you?
So far so good We went to Venice just after we got married and we have a few different holidays planned for the rest of the year so it’s nice to have things to look forward to as we looked forward to the wedding for so long.
